Hello everyone & happy new year! I hope everyone had a fantastic Christmas and you are all feeling excited for all of 2019’s many possibilities. I always get excited for the 1st January to roll round, its like a fresh start, a clean slate, and we get 365 days to be awesome and make some magic.

I am sure a lot of you have already made some new year resolutions, including some health and fitness ones too! I personally tend to steer clear of making ‘resolutions’ now but instead set myself goals and objectives for the new year (more at the end of the post!).

I am sure everyone is doing fantastic in terms of starting your resolutions or preparing to smash your goals, but I know that without setting SMART goals, it can be difficult as there is no real specific goal setting and timescales to adhere too.

SMART Goals – What the hell are they?!

Setting SMART goals is a great way to stay on track and keep your self accountable. S = Specific M = Measurable A = Achievable R = Realistic T = Time framed.

For example a poorly stated goal would be ‘Lose weight’. We could make this ’SMART’ by saying ‘I want to lose 2 stone by my holiday in May 2019’. There is a timeframe *May 2019’, measurable (we can measure the weight loss), its realistic (5 months time), specific (2 stone) ect.

This could then be further broken down to make it more achievable and to put smaller steps in place to action this.

What are you goals for next year? Can you make them smarter?

For me this year I have some overall fitness & health goals I want to achieve but I also want to build some habits that will also improve my health and fitness.

Goals for 2019

  • Hit 160lbs
  • Focus more on recovery (mentally & physically)
  • Squat 60kg
  • Deadlift 80kg
  • Hip thrust 100kg
  • Bench 50kg
  • 1 Unassisted Pullup
  • Body Fat 20-25%

As you can see above they are quite general as I do not want to bore you with the specifics but to make these achievable I will take my current lifts and stats and use them as a starting point.

Writing my goals down has really got me excited for the upcoming year! I can’t wait to see how everything improves next year and how with my new focus and motivation, I will be smashing 2019.
