A Safety Checklist for Personal Trainers

As a personal trainer, you will not only need to be physically active, but you will often use various machinery and equipment to help your clients experience the best possible results during a session. For this reason, every action should be made with your own and your clients’ safety in mind.

To maintain a safe and secure space each day, here is a safety checklist for personal trainers to live by.

Review Potential Hazards

Every workplace features potential hazards that could pose a risk to a person’s safety. Regardless of whether you are working out in a gym or in the great outdoors, you must review potential safety hazards before you start a session.

Common hazards to look out for can include:

  • Dangerous surfaces (bumps on gym flooring or holes in the ground outdoors)
  • Slippery surfaces (avoid slip, trip and fall hazards)
  • Equipment issues (ensure machines are in good working order and well-maintained)
  • A lack of space (ensure you have enough room to move to avoid a collision or injury)
  • Temperature (find a spot with an adequate temperature and ensure your clients have access to water)
  • Weather (wear appropriate clothing when exercising outdoors)

Understand Your Clients’ Fitness Levels

Every personal trainer must take the time to learn more about their clients’ current fitness level. Never assume the level they can start at and discuss their limitations to develop a plan that works for their body. It will help you to create a healthy, safe environment for your client, and can ease them back into exercise gradually.

Determine the Level of Risk to a Client

In addition to gaining an understanding of your clients’ existing fitness levels, it is important to consider other factors before devising a workout plan, such as:

  • A client’s age
  • Physical ability (e.g., an existing medical condition, disability, or injury)
  • Medication requirements
  • Activity skill level

By identifying the different risks, you could create an effective plan to minimise potential health issues during an exercise plan.

Secure Personal Trainer Insurance

Every personal trainer would be smart to invest in personal trainer insurance. Unfortunately, unavoidable injuries can happen during a workout. As you are responsible for a session, you could be personally liable should a client experience a slip, fall or injury during an exercise. Personal trainer insurance can ultimately provide financial protection should the worst happen.

If, however, you experience an accident at a gym during a session, which might be due to inadequate machine or slippery surfaces, you will have every right to make an injury at work compensation claim with the help of the-compensation-experts.co.uk.

Record Potential Hazards

Before every personal training session, make notes of any and all potential hazards, as well as the action taken to either decrease or eradicate the risk. It might also be helpful to rank the potential risk from 1 to 10. By recording hazards and your actions, you could prove you took every possible step to reduce or remove a risk during a session.
