Most people suffer from mental health problems in this day and age. As we live through a global pandemic, more and more of you are probably starting to experience a mental overload. You’re anxious about what will happen in the future, you may feel depressed because you’ve lost your job, or you could be dealing with so much stress from the whole situation.
While lots of people suffer from mental health issues, not all of us are great at coping with them. Some people are able to forget about their problems or make them disappear because they know how to handle them. Others will try to cope, but end up making things worse. This is what inspired me to create this self-care post all about the wrong way to cope with mental health problems. Too many of us are going about it in the wrong way, and I want to shine a light on some of the negative steps you might be taking. In turn, this should help you figure out the right way to combat your problems.
Masking the pain
When you have mental health problems, the pain becomes too much to bear. So, the obvious decision is to try and mask the pain. Unfortunately, this causes more problems as you find bad ways of doing this. For most people, it involves some type of damaging or addictive tendencies. This includes alcohol abuse, doing drugs, pornography addiction – pretty much anything that takes your mind off your problems. The relief you get is great, but the issue is you need it all the time. You slowly depend on your crutches, meaning you become addicted and add to your mental health problems.
Staying silent
Silence is never the answer. Loads of people suffer from mental health problems without any of their friends or family being aware of it. When you don’t talk about a problem, it brews inside you. It’s like a volcano that someone has tried to plug up. Eventually, the pressure gets too much, and there’s a huge eruption. The same can happen to you, but emotionally. Reach out to people and talk about your problems, it’s often the first step to healing yourself.
Avoiding professional help
Psychiatrists and psychologists exist to help you. There’s nothing wrong with going to therapy sessions with a mental health counsellor. In fact, it is a fantastic way to open up about your issues and get guidance from someone with experience in this field. Therefore, one of the worst mistakes is avoiding professional help. It will get you nowhere, and you keep falling back into the same cycle. Professional guidance makes you feel more accountable and you can be put on a plan that helps you deal with your issues one day at a time.
If you suffer from any mental health problems, don’t do the three things mentioned above. Don’t try to mask the pain, don’t suffer in silence, and don’t avoid getting proper help. Instead, confront your demons, talk about them, and seek help!
