How To Get Motivated To Keep Working Out

When you’re in the process of losing weight, seeing the pounds come off can be all the motivation you need. Once you’re in the maintenance stage, however, getting motivated can be a lot harder. You may know in your head that you need to work out but you just don’t feel it. If that sounds familiar, here are some points you should check.

Are you getting the right nutrition?

There’s a lot more to nutrition than just making sure to watch your calorie intake. You need to ensure that you’re getting the right balance of foods along with a suitable level of vitamins and minerals. Hydration also matters a lot.

Ideally, you should get all the nutrients you need from your diet. In the real world, this can be quite a challenge, especially for girls and women. Puberty, menstruation, pregnancy/nursing and the menopause can all affect your need for nutrients. That’s before you factor in dietary needs/preferences such as allergies and vegetarianism/veganism.

If you’re feeling low in energy, then your diet may well be the root of the problem. Try keeping a record of what you eat. If everything looks good, then you may want to see a medical professional. If, however, you’re clearly lacking in certain nutrients, then you need to change up your diet and/or head to a supplement store.

Do you need to power up the atmosphere?

If your personal energy levels are good, then maybe you need to power up the atmosphere when you work out. This can be particularly important if your fitness routine is largely based in your own home.

It’s very easy to wind up doing the same exercises at the same time in the same place. There’s nothing wrong about this in itself. It can, however, end up being rather dull and, hence, demotivating.

If you have a dedicated workout space, then you can try switching up the decor. In particular, try adding a large mirror if you possibly can. Mirrors are helpful for checking your form and help to amplify light. Even if you don’t have a dedicated workout space, you can still make sure that there’s good lighting, plenty of ventilation and the right music.

Do you need to change up your exercise routine?

If neither option works for you, then maybe you need to change up your exercise routine itself. At the end of the day, you need a mixture of cardio, flexibility and strength training. There are literally countless options for getting cardio and flexibility training. Options for strength training are more limited but there are still plenty of them.

For example, if you’ve got used to lifting dumbbells and swinging kettlebells, then how about trying barbells and medicine balls? What about bodyweight exercises? Have you considered investing in a pull-up bar for your home? There are renter-friendly options.

Another option would be to get some resistance bands and go train in a different location. In principle, resistance bands tend to be less effective than weights. In practice, they’re affordable, easy-to-store and portable. This means they can be great options if you want to pack a bag and go exercise somewhere different.
